Practical Information on Driving in China

Speed Limits

China National Highways (which are not expressways), a common speed limit is 80 km/h (50 mph). In some localities, speed limits may drop to 40 km/h (25 mph). On some designated “fast through routes” in cities, speed limits are up to 80 km/h (50 mph).

Kids in Cars

China does not have national laws governing child restraints. Late last year, Shanghai authorities introduced regulations that require the use of child seats when carrying children under 4 in cars. But there are no provisions for punishing violators.

Minimum age

The legal driving age in China is 18.

Alcohol and Driving

Because driving while intoxicated has become a criminal offense, the license of the drunk driver will be revoked, and it cannot be re-obtained for five years.

Phone use & driving

Using a cellphone while driving is prohibited in China. Violators can be fined 200 yuan ($29) and lose two points on their driver’s license.

Auto Insurance

Compulsory liability insurance is mandatory in China, for traffic accidents Compulsory liability insurance in China is used to cover third-party injuries and/or deaths in car accidents.

Driver's License

To drive a car in China, you need a Chinese driver’s license. China does not recognize the International Driving Permit or other foreign driver’s licenses. Only foreigners with a valid residence permit can apply for a Chinese driver’s license.

How to Exchange your foreign driver’s license

If you have a residency permit and a driver’s license from another country, you can get a Chinese driver’s license (valid for 6 years) just by passing a written exam. The process and the exam take place in the traffic police department in the city you live in and you may need a prior appointment.

Note: Information may not be up-to-date. Please check official government information for latest laws and regulations.

Example of service challenge solved

A partner of ours had a Fortune 50 company with very specific requests for a flexible multi city service in China. Specifics none of the local DSPs could deliver on. We received the challenge, with no prior business in China, to create such a program.

We met the challenge and did so well that our partner used it for a client video case study that they produced. Please see video below.

Partner quote “We have a great partner in ExpatRide, and we are actually looking to expand this same program into multiple regions”.
