Kids in Cars

There are no laws relating to seatbelts/car-seats for children. Although in Mexico City (and maybe other cities) young children cannot sit in the front seat. It is up to you whether you want to use a car seat for your child.

Documentation

Mexican visa or tourist card
Proof of ownership / lease documents for the vehicle
A valid driver’s license with photo

Minimum Age

The legal driving age in Mexico is 18 years old.

Auto Insurance

You need to carry Mexican auto insurance to drive legally in the country, as liability coverage is mandatory. It is generally recommended, based on Mexican laws for possible payouts for bodily injury or fatality, that drivers get a minimum of about $300,000 worth of third-party liability damage coverage.

Phone & Driving

Mexico’s distracted driving law prohibits all motorists from using a handheld mobile communication device to read, view, or type a text message while driving.

Seat Belts

Mexican law requires drivers and front-seat passenger to wear seat belts. Passengers in the back supposedly have a choice. Children under 12 are advised to sit in the back seat. Children under five are supposed to be secured in a special seat fastened by the seat belt in the back.

Driver’s license

In Mexico, it is each state’s responsibility to regulate driving in their respective jurisdiction, and therefore each state issues their own driving licence. Drivers need to demonstrate residence in a state in order to acquire that state’s licence. All states recognize each other’s licence.

An International Driving Permit is a translation of your national driving license. Any foreigner with a Driving License from their country and their valid passport can drive in Mexico as a tourist.

How to Exchange your foreign driver’s license to a Mexico Driver’s License

A foreign driving license is valid in Mexico and it is not obligatory for a foreign national to acquire a Mexican license while the foreign license remains valid. Obtaining a Mexican license is relatively simple and does not mean that the original license needs to be forfeited. Driving licenses in Mexico are issued in some states by the Department of Transport and Roads. Rules and regulations vary from state to state as regards the age when it is legal to drive, the cost of the license, and the types of driving tests required.

Expats can get a driver’s license in Mexico with anyone of the following visas:

Medical form

You will need a medical form to get your Mexican driver’s license. The most convenient way to get this form is to visit your local Cruz Roja. There a doctor will give you a brief examination, fill out your form for you, and take your blood type to be printed on your driver’s license in case of an emergency.

If you are over 80 years old, you will be required to see an optometrist for an eye test to receive or renew your Mexican driver’s license.
